Jayanna Draper, winner of the Intercounty Electric Cooperative Essay Contest winner, spent last week in D.C. on the Missouri Youth Tour (MYT) 2023. Among many other things on their first full day in Washington D.C., Jayanna and the MYT delegates visited Capitol Hill, met with elected representative and toured the U.S. Capitol, Botanical Gardens, Supreme Court and Library of Congress. They visited more memorials in the afternoon before a sunset dinner cruise on the Potomac River.
On their 2nd day in D.C., Jayanna and the MYT delegates started the day by seeing the Changing of the Guard and other solemn monuments at Arlington National Cemetery. They had lunch at Carmineโs โ an Italian restaurant in D.C. โ before going to the American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Fordโs Theatre. They ended their night with dinner and games at Dave and Busterโs.
On their 3rd day in D.C., Jayanna and the MYT delegates started the day hearing from a U.S. Secret Service agent who went on the Missouri Youth Tour decades ago. The rest of the morning was spent at Mount Vernon. They shopped for souvenirs, took pictures at the White House and visited the International Spy Museum in the afternoon. They ended their day catching a baseball game at Nationals Park.
On Jayannaโs last full day in D.C., she and the MYT delegates started the morning by visiting the Marine Corps, Lincoln, Korean War, Vietnam War and World War II memorials, as well as the Washington Monument. After lunch, they visited the museums of the Smithsonian, including American History and Natural History museums and National Archives before touring the Air Force Memorial. After dinner, they attended the All-States Dinner and Dance where they heard from motivational speakers, NRECA representatives and an electric co-op lineworker who helped bring power to a remote village in Guatemala. Jayanna loved her experience provided by Intercounty Electric Cooperative and had this to say to all upcoming juniors:
โIf you are a junior in high school and are given this opportunity, take the chance. Write the essay, because trust me, if you ever get to experience Youth Tour, you'll come back saying it really was the โTrip of a Lifetime.โโ
